SO LONG 2009, HELLO 2010

Hi all,

I am sure all of you must be excited with the New Year's celebration. I want to wish all of you a very HAPPY NEW YEAR! Another year is coming to an end with the new one waiting to burst on to the scene. For most of us, there will be changes. Changes are not all bad. The Standard 1 will be Standard 2, the Standard 6 goes to Form 1 and so on. Whatever the changes may bring, keep an open mind.

For those who still remain where they are, fine. I hope the year will bring all the joy and happiness to you too. I have many things planned this year and I am looking forward to teaching all of you the best that I can. I hear there will be a lot of changes at the centre as well. Lookout for new teachers, classes and books. I will still remain same old teacher Jason but maybe with a little change. LOL.

I will also know my new timetable for 2010 soon, some of you maybe happy and some may not. Any which way, if you need my help just write to me or come and see me. I will be happy to spend my time with you. Remember, for those who can draw, write poetry or essays or take pictures please submit it to me so I can publish it to my Student Life Newsletter.

Now, I am sitting in front of my computer enjoying the last moments of 2009. It has been a eventful year for me and maybe for some of you as well. As the minutes tick away, I just want to thank god for the blessings he has showered on my family and I. Also to the people who helped us in our time of need. I look forward to 2010 as it is a brand new start.

Let's great the new year with a positive mindset and a healthy appetite for work!

GREAT TO SEE YOU ALL!

It was great to be back in KIDDO class. I am sorry that some of you were in A class. As I said, I was just replacing a teacher. Some of you have grown up since I last saw you. I really appreciate how you gave me all your attention in class. It was so nice to get to tell you some stories and hear from you.

I hope that you liked the bookmarks I made for you. Remember to use them.... in books! That's what they are for. I am encouraging you to pick up a book. The secret to learning isn't about how good the teacher is but your interest to learn. No matter how good a teacher he cannot teach to those that don't want to learn.

Being the holidays, I hope that all of you have a lot of fun but remember to keep safe, help around the house and most of all use some free time to read. Okay... enough of me talking. Remember, if you want to ask me anything, just come find me. I'll be happy to help.

See you in class!

Dinosaur footprints found!

I am facinated by dinosaurs and when I read this news, I knew that I would blog about it. I think every kid dreams about meeting or discovering dinosaurs. I am no different, except maybe I'm an adult. So here's the story about the latest in dinosaurs.

In New Zealand geologists there have uncovered, what would be the first evidence that dinosaurs once roamed New Zealand over seventy million years ago. These footprints represent the first evidence ever of dinosaurs on South Island. Imagine that?

Footprints of dinosaurs were discovered in northwestern part of Nelson, a region at the northern end of South Island. In an area of about ten kilometers (six miles) in length comprise where the footprints were found. Six specific locations within the area hold the footprints.Sauropod

About twenty footprints were discovered in one particular soft sandstone location. The largest ones measure about 60 centimeters (two feet) in diameter! The footprints are believed to have belonged to sauropods - plant-eating dinosaurs which were among the largest animals to have lived, growing up to six metres in length and weighing several tonnes.

sauropod dinosaur

I wonder if there were any dinosaurs in Malaysia?
Wouldn't that be cool! What would you call the dinosaur if it were discovered? Teh-tarikosaurus, rotichanaisaurus, or Malaysiano-saurus? Maybe Onemalaysia-saur, M-Rex or Rojakosaurus? LOL. Use your imagination draw a picture of it, write your name and CL No., bring it to me.

It would be great fun!

Mysterious Nazca Lines

Left behind by an ancient civilization, these lines feature hundreds of individual figures, ranging in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks or orcas, llamas, and lizards.

How they were made
The lines are shallow designs in the ground where the reddish pebbles that cover the surrounding landscape have been removed, revealing the whitish earth underneath. Hundreds are simple lines or geometric shapes, and more than seventy are natural or human figures. The largest are over 200 metres (660 ft) across. The mysterious part is that these lines could only be seen from the air but airplanes weren't invented yet!

What were they for?
Scientist have long argued over what the lines were for but generally connect them to religious significance. "The geometric ones could indicate the flow of water or be connected to rituals to summon water. The spiders, birds, and plants could be fertility symbols. Other possible explanations include: irrigation schemes or giant astronomical calendars.

Disappeared
What happened to the people who made these lines? Now new evidence has been uncovered that might give a clue to this. The ancient South American Nazca civilization may have caused its own demise by clear-cutting huge swaths of forest, a new study has found. The civilization disappeared mysteriously around 1,500 years ago, after apparently prospering during the first half of the first millennium A.D. in the valleys of south coastal Peru.

Moral: Don't chop the trees. Deforestation can cause disasters to happen, like what is happening now. Global warming and climate change are causing havoc to our Earth.

Think about it!

Quakes and Quirks of fried chicken

Having felt an earthquake before, a small tremor, I wouldn't want to be in places where the people receive full impact of the quakes. My experience was not scary but surreal in a sense my brain was telling me something and I was feeling something else. I know my house is solid but my senses of touch and feeling was telling me that I was like sitting on a big piece of jelly.

Speaking of surreal, I had two experiences involving every ones favourite fried chicken restaurant chain. During the recent Hari Raya, my students Crab, Prawn and I were in BJ Complex for looking for food. We settled on the obvious choice, somewhere we all can agree too. So there we were enjoying our meal of chicken rice when I found a hair in my soup. Least to say they were shocked.

I called for the manager who apologised profusely and offered to bring me another new soup. By now both Crab and Prawn were laughing real hard. Prawn joked that I might find another hair in the new soup. I was in no mood for another tasty delicious hair soup, I declined. We continued with our lunch. Just as we were about to leave the manager came back, and with a smile, she plopped a box of fried chicken on the table. Smilling ever so sweetly, she said sorry, again.

The next experience wasn't so nice, I had went to the restaurant too buy some fried chicken and found myself shortchanged and without a receipt. Only when I threatened to see the manager, that I managed to get back my correct changed. Earlier when I was queuing, I saw the staff say goodbye to him. This leads me to suspect, it is their tactic to pull this game whenever the boss is not around.

Hey, it was not about the few ringgit but more of the Principal. Imagine taking just one ringgit from a hundred customers everyday!

Anyway, I can't believe Deepavali is here and my birthday is just a week a way! I wonder how old I'll be this year. Last year I was 18! LOL.

See you all in class!

GHOST BEATS BOY

It seems that old England is a place for spooks to be and they're not shy to let you know they're there. Heck! They'll even beat you up for it. The boy said he did not see anyone throughout the whole thing but said it sounded like a man because of the heavy breathing.

That's what happen to a 13-year-old boy, who had finished school and was alone in their home in York Road, Hartlepool. He claims he was suddenly pulled upright, dragged across the living room, taken to the front door and thrown out into the street. His attack lasted for five minutes before the startled youngster fled to a neighbour's house.

His mother turned to the church after the attack where he was left bruised and bewildered by what his family say could only have been a ghost or poltergeist.

Fire! Fire! Fire!

The Hungry Ghost Month has come and gone, soon it will be mooncake festival again. Although I don't remember much of my childhood due to an accident, sometimes a familiar sight, sound, smell or touch can revive old memories still kept in the damaged parts of the brain.

In this case it was these lanterns. I am not talking about the modern plastic lanterns or the ones with Ben10, Transformers or Pokemon. It these traditional wire framed, translucent plastic and hand painted ones. These are quite rare nowadays, many kids prefer the battery operated types. One of the reasons maybe quite obvious or is it.... these old lanterns use a candle inside for a light source.

T-Rex Lantern

Anyway, I asked my mum about the time when I was a kid to piece together this story. I think I was around 7 or 8 years old. Back then, we never heard about the lanterns you guys and gals are used to. Some of the kids still carried a milk tin with a candle inside and the richer ones would have beautiful handmade paper lanterns. I wasn't rich but I had a lantern like the one in the picture.

I loved dragons and my lantern reflected my preference. I think my sister had a bunny and my cousin carried a rooster. Well, "rooster boy" is the focus of my story. We were having fun with our lanterns when my cousin's lantern's light went out. He grinned and took out a candle from his pocket to replace the one that was used. The genius forgot matches, so asked if could help by lighting his candle.

Anyone would tell you that if you try to put a lighted candle in a lantern would be tricky. As you can imagine, his candle touched the inside of the lantern and it started to burn!

"Fire..! Fire! Fire!" he shouted. But it was too late, in a matter of seconds his beautiful rooster became Kenny Rogers Roaster and was roasted reduced to a roasted bunch of twisted wire and ash. He cried and ran home. Pity him. I guess we all were bad to laugh at him. It was funny to see the lantern burn. (So... bad..)

Anyway, he proudly had another one the next day, so I guess he soon forgot about his fire incident.

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

Here in Sg. Ara, there are certainly many dogs of various breeds, colour and sizes while some are friendly others are not. So an old idiom comes to mind when I look at all these dogs. Although I must say that sleeping dogs are among the cutest things. There's something about the idiom warning that rings in my head, don't disturb a sleeping dog or else it will bite you!

The same thing I can say about our poor tired fathers if they come back from work and fall asleep on the armchair or sofa. Best you let him wake up before begging him for a Bakugan or a Ben10 watch. So the meaning of the idiom is don't look for trouble or avoid restarting conflict. Kicking a dog or waking up father is a definite No..No...

Eg.

a. I think you should let sleeping dogs lie and don't do it yourself.
- (avoid unesscessary trouble)

b. He has forgiven you, you better let sleeping dogs lie.
- (avoid restarting conflict)

Ghostly Encounters in the Ghost Month!

Everybody knows the hilly strecth of road near Relau going to Ayer Itam, everyday many cars, lorries, buses and motorbikes traverse the road. For old cars and motorbikes, going up hill is a challenging task. Anyway.... early one morning my friend used the road going to work. As she was riding her old rickety motorbike, she noticed an old man walking in the middle of the road. He acted like he owned the road, without a care in the world.

"Does this old man has a death wish of something?" she wondered.

Just then, she heard a car zooming up the hill, from behind. She wanted to shout, to warn the old man but the car was too fast. She looked in disbelief as the car hit the old man but nothing happened. It was like the car went through the man!!! So as she passed the old man she dared not look, hoping her old motor bike wouldn't breakdown. She knew what "it" was. I use the word "it" because, the old man wasn't a man. Quickly, she passed the man and was well on her way to Relau.

I also had another student relate to me a similar story when I told her about the "old man", She and her cousin were coming back to Relau late at night and used that strech of road. As they were coming down from the hill the pair spotted an old woman walking by the side of the road. When they got near to her, she DISAPPEARED!!! That's so spooky as it was after midnight. You can bet your pokemon cards, bakugan and BEN10s that they won't use that road again whenever its late.

The funny ending to the story is my friend told her friends about the old man and they decided to play the number for old man for 4D Mangnum. Guess what? They won the 1st prize, all of them got a few thousand ringgit each except my friend who got a fright and some white hair!

Since this is a ghost month, be careful ya! :) Tell me your ghost stories if you have one. If it's intersting I'll put it up here.

Bless you..have a Roti Tissue?!

Haaah.....haaah choo! I need a tissue. sniff sniff... Oops.. That's not what I wanted. Anyway, I recently ordered Roti Tissue and ... Wow, was it big! It starts of as ordinary Roti Canai dough but gets stretched and stretched until it becomes paper thin. A drizzle of sugar and drench it with condensed milk and roll it up into a cone...Tadaaa! Roti Tissue. I wouldn't recommend you blowing your nose on it.

Looking at it, I didn't know which end to start from. Luckily the helpful "mamak"* offered a tip.

"Start at the top!"

The Roti Tissue is very crunchy and crumbles in your hand. That is when its not sticking to you courtesy of the condensed milk!! If you want to try Roti Tissue, go to Indian Muslim restaurants like Pelita or Dinas here in Sg. Ara.

The flu, UFOs and my new laptop!

I've returned from my trip from KL and looking forward to getting back to my normal routine. But as luck would have it..... I caught the flu. No...no H1N1 but I was real scared. I had high temperature for 2 days and my faced looked like a zombie out of Resident Evil. The skin around my nose was peeling and red. On top of it all I went 2 days WITHOUT food. Just slept...mumbled...moaned and dreamt.

A week ago, I decided not to wait for PC Fair and bought my laptop straight away. I went to a trusted dealer and she gave me the same offer she was going to give at the fair!!! Yahoo... I also got something extra from her, a notebook lock. So now I am the proud owner of an Acer Aspire Timeline. A sleek 14inch gun metal grey, 8hr batterylife dolby intelcentrino, windows vista machine. Its ultra thin and light weight, you don't feel it when you carry it. It has wifi, bluetooth, camera everything!! You all will get to see it soon. :) I just need to outfit it with the latest tools.

Lastly about UFO, there is a saying "where there is smoke...there must be fire". If people all over the world are seeing something, then there must be something to see. It is not some Durian, Rambutan or Ciku errr.. I mean Ali, Ah Beng or Rajoo that had seen it. Accountants, Lawyers, US President, Pilots etc... Come on, would they tell a lie? What about the UFO in Texas where the whole town saw it!!!!!! Who is crazy now? But most people who've seen the UFO are afraid to come forward as they might be laughed at.

So, conclusion. I believe something is out there. I want to know (IW2K)

I saw Michael Jackson last night!

For a moment, through all the smoke and the dazzling lights, Michael Jackson came on the stage of the E&O Grand Ballroom! The encore performance, for what was the biggest social event of the year in Penang.

Thunderous applause broke about as "Michael" began his dance and "sang" "Dangerous". Confused? Well it wasn't really MJ, it was an imperosnator (someone who looks like and pretends to be). But you could feel MJ's spirit watching and smilling on all of us as we remember him.

Talk to Teacher Jason about the video clip of the show!

JAPAN'S WATERS INVADED

Echizen kurage!

Nomura's Jellyfish

This monster-sized jellyfish is about six feet (1.83 meters) in diameter (around) and weigh more than 450 pounds (204 kilos). That's more or less the weight of 5 children! They can poison fish, sting humans and have even been known to disable nuclear power stations by blocking the seawater pumps used to cool the reactors. The larger specimens could destroy the nets while the fish caught alongside them would be left slimy and inedible (cannot be eaten).

What's being done: A company called Tango Jersey Dairy has even come up with a “slightly chewy” vanilla and jellyfish ice cream, which is created by soaking diced cubes of Echizen kurage in milk. Eeeww?

Can't beat them? Eat them!!

What's in MY drink?!

I remembered a story that makes even my cockroach tea sound good to me. Some of you may have heard my story but to those that missed out. I told the class about a man who drowned in a city's water supply! Yuck, "dead body" water...yummy? Yuck! Although chlorine was pumped in, I think it doesn't make it better.

Metro Manila, May 19, 2003 (STAR)

CORPSE THREATENS MANILA WATER SUPPLY

Health and sanitation workers rushed to remove the remains of a man who drowned after falling into a Philippine water system, fearing the corpse could contaminate drinking water pumped to several suburban areas near Manila. Work was underway to retrieve the body and authorities assures the public that drinking water remained safe. They have isolated the pipeline from the whole network of Manila Water. It was a big loss but but couldn't risk pumping the water with a corpse to the people who are using the water.

As precaution, additional chlorine was added to the water. Who got stuck in the pipes? A 19-year-old man was picking fruit from trees around a Manila Water Co. facility in suburban Quezon city, when he fell into an aqueduct (drain) and drowned. His body was then swept away by a current into a main canal where it got stuck. Manila Water said it planned to flush out the body. Manila Water currently services the eastern portion of Metropolitan Manila covering several cities and municipalities, including the financial district of Makati and Quezon.

A similar case happened here in Malaysia, it involved a local soft drink maker and a worker believed to be foreign. This worker was cleaning out a tank where they made the drinks fell inside and then drowned. The rest of the workers were unaware then used the tank contents to bottle soft drinks... with the man inside...talk about Eeeeew..... but this could be just an urban legend.

So cheers and drink up!

UFO's in Malaysia?

Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO) a photo of a UFO

Many people claim to have seen weird things in the night sky. Some are natural like shooting stars, and some are man made objects like satellites. Others have claimed that they were abducted and there are reports of these sightings or abduction all over the world. Here in Malaysia, we too have sightings. I cannot verify the reports but here are some going back to 1950. However I can confirm a case that was in the newspaper recently.

Photo taken from Kosmo!

Saturday April 9, 2009. A Graphic designer claimed that he spotted an unidentified flying object (UFO) circling overhead in Taman Dato’ Onn, Larkin in Johor at 10pm on Thursday, reported Kosmo!. Mohd Zamri Zain, 30, said the UFO was seen for a few hours before it disappeared into the clouds. He added that the lit object had appeared a few times since early March and was initially seen by his brother Zaid Zain, 43. He recorded the UFO’s movements with his digital camera and did not believe the object was a laser light or reflection from an aeroplane. When the images from his camera were enlarged on his computer, Mohd Zamri claimed that white and green lights could be seen clearly on the object.

What I found: http://www.alienandufopictures.com/ufo_pictures.html

Listed Cases
  • BAU, SARAWAK (EAST MALAYSIA), Early 1950s. This event took place in an isolated area in the hilly country known at that time as British North Borneo. The witness, an illiterate housewife, observed a disc-shaped object described by her as "as big as a house", emerging from behind some trees and flying silently over the valley. The object was dark in colour, and had what appeared to be port-holes, with the interior brightly lit. Beside the dome surmounting the top of the UFO there was a protrusion resembling an aerial. Beneath the UFO there were three protrusions which she described as "like anchors". The outer rim of the object was rotating.

  • PORT DICKSON, SEREMBAN, Early 1950s. At 11.00 a.m. one fine morning, a platoon of soldiers and their British instructor sighted a silver-coloured, disc-shaped domed object flying quite low over the trees. It was travelling tilted at an angle, and emitted a high-pitched sound. The soldiers morse-code signalling apparatus ceased to function during the few minutes that the UFO was in sight.

  • PENANG ISLAND, January 1967. A lawyer and his accountant sighted an object hovering silently over the channel separating the island from the Mainland. Close examination through binoculars revealed a pancake-shaped object with a dome on top.

  • KAMPUNG PERTAMA, April 1979. A UFO, elliptical in shape and sparkling like a star, landed one night in the rice-field of a village, and about twenty people gathered to watch it. As the UFO landed it was seen to get smaller and then to split into three smaller craft.

  • KULIM, May 1979. A group of boys playing near a cattle-shed sighted a small object, less than two feet in diameter, gliding over the fields and emitting a strange sound. The UFO had three legs of its landing gear extended, seemingly about to land, when one of the boys tried to touch it. An intense beam of light shot out from the rim of the craft and temporarily blinded the boys. They screamed for help, attracting the attention of two adults, who came rushing to the scene and also observed the UFO. Meanwhile the cattle in the adjacent shed were intensely restless and were struggling to break away from the posts to which they were tied.

If aliens really have visited Earth that it only makes sense that they had to use a space craft to journey from their home planet to Earth. It isn't really a surprise to know that some people are lucky enough to spot a UFO in the sky and take pictures of it. But many of these people that have taken UFO pictures have faced ridicule and questions relating to their character because they have dared to go public with their UFO pictures. Some of the people that have taken UFO pictures have died thinking it was only them that knew the truth about UFO.

Lookout for more updates on UFO.

MAYAN CALENDAR, 2012

Some people believe that cataclysmic and apocalyptic events will occur in the year 2012. This prediction is based on what is claimed to be the end-date of the Mayan Long Count calendar, which is presented as lasting 5,125 years and as terminating on December 21 or 23, 2012. Various ideas have been advanced concerning a possible end of the world in 2012. One idea involves a geomagnetic reversal (often incorrectly referred to as a polar shift by proponents of this theory), which could be triggered by a massive solar flare, one with energy equal to 100 million atomic bombs.

This is supported by evidence that the Earth's magnetic field is weakening, which indicates an impending reversal of the north and south magnetic poles. Scientists believe the Earth is overdue for a geomagnetic reversal, and has been for a long time, even since the time of the Mayans, because the last reversal was 780,000 years ago. Critics, however, claim geomagnetic reversals take up to 5,000 years to complete, and do not start on any particular date. However, NASA expects a particularly strong solar maximum sometime between 2010 and 2012 but there is no scientific evidence linking a solar maximum to a geomagnetic reversal. A solar maximum would be mostly notable for its effects on satellite and cellular phone communications. - Adapted from Wikipedia

Who are the Mayans? The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization, noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. Initially established during the Preclassic period (c. 2000 BC to 250 AD), many Maya cities reached their highest state development during the Classic period (c. 250 AD to 900 AD), and continued throughout the Postclassic period until the arrival of the Spanish. At its peak, it was one of the most densely populated and culturally dynamic societies in the world.

The Maya civilization shares many features with other Mesoamerican civilizations due to the high degree of interaction and cultural diffusion that characterized the region.

Hey guys...look at this!

DORAEMON

HATYAI GHOST STORY......

I remember one time, I went to Hatyai with my two friends. I booked a hotel that was in the city centre called Lee Gardens Plaza but one of my friends, Skinny wasn't very happy about it. "It's haunted, you know." he protested. "Many people died there." he complained. My other friend, Yeap couldn't care less if there were or weren't any ghost. As for me, I reasoned that if there were really deaths in the hotel, it would be made the papers and its ideal location at the centre of town made it an atttraction. So with Yeap and Skinny in tow we checked in to the hotel. It was a double room and the view was nice. It overlooked the city and we could see Big C signboard in the distance. Big C is a hypermarket much like our Tesco but unlike our Tesco, it has much to offer. That night while Yeap and I snoozed comfortably Skinny was awake the whole night. Hearing what he later claimed to be "ghost sound".

But I guess he fell aslep towards the morning. I was the earliest to wake up. I love Dim Sum in Hatyai in the morning and was looking forward to it. I could also go for the buffet breakfast downstairs at the cafe. I took a shower and the water vapour from my hot shower soon fogged up the mirror. Without thinking much... or thinking with an empty stomach. I wrote "I AM COMING TO GET YOU" on the mirror. I finished my bath and got dressed just as Skinny was stirring. He complained that he was unable to sleep well an scolded me again for choosing this hotel.

I took him to see his "ghost sound", it was actually a drainpipe that is connected to tall the rooms and whenever someone washes their hads or takes a bath the water comes down the pipe creating a sound. Relieved, he then went inside to take a bath. A few moments later, I heard a girlish scream. Eeeeeee! Followed by a towel clad Skinny running out of the bathroom.

"I...I...I...." he stammered. "ttttold you!" his voice stil shrilly. "This hotel is haunted!" he shouted.

I asked him what it was and he replied the ghost is trying to catch him. Perpelexed, I asked him to show me. There nit was, on the mirror was the words I drew.... "I AM COMING TO GET YOU." "There...there... I told you so! Our room is haunted!" said Skinny looking frightened. I followed him into the bathroom to see what he was hysterical about. But when I got there, I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry. "See...see.. there..there.....it says its coming to get me." I told Skinny I wrote that. He asked me why the $#@!% did I do that. Actually, "I AM COMING TO GET YOU" meant I was going after the DIM SUM for breakfast! What a dummy! After this he was convinced that here were no ghost in the hotel. That night he slept like a pig.

The teacher and his tea

When asked, "What's your favourite drink?" Usually my reply would be tea. Why tea? Is it because I'm a tea...cher? Ha ha ha ha. Hmm... why do I like this beverage? To me, tea is refreshing and there are so many different types of tea. So you won't get bored. For a nice refreshing drink after a long class, I take my tea black with sugar and ice. Depending on where I buy it, it can be Ceylon Tea or plain old Malaysian Tea from Cameron Highlands.

Other types of tea that are good to drink are like Chinese Tea and Green Tea. For these teas you don't add sugar. Chinese tea is especially good with a meal of Dim Sum. I like my tea with lots of ice but some people like it hot. You can take most tea with honey as well. I remember one time in Thailand where they served Lemon Grass tea. Lemon Grass is a plant or herb found in most Asian cooking, in has a lemony tangy smell. It is used in dishes like Satay, curries and Tomyam.

What's Cockroach Tea? Ha ha ha.. It was sometime back, I bought tea from a coffee shop and my fellow teachers said "Hey Teacher Jason, there's a something in your drink." I didn't believe them as I thought they were trying to pull my leg. I dismissed it but they were insistent So I had a look. Wow! It was a drowned cockroach in my tea. I told the coffee shop fella about it and he just coolly poured the tea away and rinsed the container and poured in more tea! Later in class, I had a hard time deciding whether to drink the tea or not....I had a few sips....yuck?

MORE ABOUT TEA

Tea is made from the leaves, leaf buds, and internodes of the Camellia sinensis plant. It is prepared and cured by various methods. For some people "Tea" also refers to the aromatic beverage prepared from the cured leaves by combination with hot or boiling water. After water, tea is the most widely-consumed beverage in the world. It has a cooling, slightly bitter, refreshing flavour. The four types of tea most commonly found on the market are black tea, oolong tea, green tea and white tea, all of which can be made from the same bushes, processed differently, and in the case of fine white tea grown differently. Pu-erh tea, a double-fermented black tea, is also often classified as amongst the most popular types of tea.

The term "herbal tea" usually refers to an infusion* of leaves, flowers, fruit, herbs or other plant material that contains no Camellia sinensis. The term "red tea" either refers to an infusion* made from the South African rooibos plant, also containing no Camellia sinensis, or, in Chinese, Korean, Japanese and other East Asian languages, refers to black tea.

GIANT FISH....or DRAGON?

"Wednesday July 8, 2009 - Giant fish sightings in Kenyir Lake By R.S.N. MURALI (The Star Online)

KUALA TERENGGANU: There is a strong possibility a type of giant fish, the aparaima gigas exists in Kenyir Lake, as there have been reports of its sightings, state Fishery Department director Munir Mohd Nawi said.

The fish - dubbed the Kenyir Monster by locals here, created quite a stir after the death of two men on June 17 supposedly linked to the fish. The possible existence of this fish in the biggest manmade lake in South East Asia was reported in the The Star the following day. A team of fish biologists would conduct detailed research on the giant fish, said Munir.
The possible culprit:A picture provided by a diver of an Arapaima Gigas that the locals claim is the giant fish found in Kenyir Lake.

He added there were numerous claims by locals, some even producing photographs to show the existence of the aparaima gigas. “A research team will embark on an expedition to determine its existence and size,” he said after the Agriculture Expo opening at Dataran Shahbandar here recently. Munir added the department would attempt to collect more facts about the aparaima gigas in Kenyir as the species was once sighted in Johor but there had been no other reports since then.

In the June 17 incident, Kenyir bird park supervisor Helmi Sukhri Hisham, 28, drowned after he mysteriously fell off his boat - believed due to the impact when his boat could have been hit by the arapaima gigas."

My Comments: Eek! If there was really a monster fish it would be really scary! Then again..mmmmm..think of the fish and chips it would make. Ha ha hahaha..... What are Arapaima Gigas? I guessed from its last name, it's a giant fish. Here are some facts about it.

What I found out: The arapaima, pirarucu, or paiche (Arapaima gigas) is a South American tropical freshwater fish. It is one of the largest freshwater fishes in the world. It can grow up to lengths of more than 2 m (6.6 ft), taller than your teacher whois at 1.8 m. In some exceptional cases even more than 2.5 m (8.2 ft) and weigh over 100 kg (220 lbs). Some say that the largest Arapaima ever caught was maximum length of an Arapaima was 4.5 m (14.8 ft)!

Large arapaima of more than 2 m are seldom found in the wild today. Their meat is said to be delicious. One fish can give as much as 70 kg of meat! Why is it here in Malaysia? The arapaima has also been introduced for fishing in Thailand and Malaysia. - adapted from Wikipedia

No PCs or Laptop.... help

I don't know how anyone could survive without a PC or laptop nowadays. Having a PC or Laptop is not just for fun and games but real work. Being a writer, private tutor and teacher, I have to send my writings to the editor, do research on topics I want to write and teach even stuff for my students in class in Sg. Ara. I cannot search for fun facts or riddles, ghost stories or even Yahoo Messenging my students and friends. I am soooooooooo disconnected!

Hopefully, I will end my misery soon...not meaning commit suicide! But go out and buy a laptop at the next PC fair in August. *sigh* Still about 30days left! Till then, I will SURVIVE...like the song. It's funny starting this blog when I am in the middle of a computer crisis, my pc in my room that I am using now has no colour, slow like a turtle with one bad leg and makes noise like a bunch of chattering crickets.

Back to my choice of notebook, at first I wanted an Acer One Note (Netbook) but now I am looking for a bigger one. You guys are lucky, I'll bring to class. Yaay! What else to say... oh yes.
